SoPoet began life as a remedy for the hustle and bustle of social media. In the digital age, it can feel impossible to find a quiet space to compose your thoughts. We believe in taking the slow and steady approach. SoPoet encourages you to sit and reflect on the frustrations and successes of your experiences. What better way to do so than by matching your best words with your sharpest images?
It’s important to us that SoPoet is a space for creativity and fun. Our users range from writers of epic, to those whose latest composition is the weekly shopping list. It doesn’t matter whether you capture the world with Nikon or Nokia, this is a platform for anyone who dares to imagine.
Poetry and photography have always shared a common goal. From William Blake to Stevie Smith, poets have always found ways to visualise their thoughts. Far from narrowing its meaning, we believe that a photograph can crystallise the essence of a poem’s mood. They say a picture speaks 1,000 words. We say why not have both?
Something as modest as a poem or a polaroid can achieve great wonders. This ethos carries through into our small team. We are currently a crew of three like-minded individuals, hailing from the North of England. Just one of us, Warren Mortimer, is a full-time poet. Lee Mortimer is a researcher in computational fluid dynamics at the University of Leeds, while David Waddington is the owner of the gelatarium Miogelato in Morecambe. This depth of experience has proved important for understanding the ties that bind the artistic world, the virtual world, and the real world together.
